Improving Congestion Control in IP-based Networks Using Feedback from Routers
نویسندگان
چکیده
In the current Internet, TCP’s congestion control is performed end-to-end possibly assisted by simple and limited congestion feedback mechanisms in routers, e.g., Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) or Random Early Detection (RED). In order to control network traffic load more accurately by reducing or even preventing congestion in (parts of) the network and improving the overall performance of TCP flows, some more complex and more powerful feedback mechanisms in routers have been developed. This technical report describes the most important of such Router Congestion Feedback (RCF) approaches based on network-information sharing (NIS) between routers and end systems in detail. In addition, the properties and functionalities of these approaches are compared to find potential candidates that can be used to improve congestion control in future IP-based networks.

Congestion pricing for flow control and multipath routing in TCP/IP networks
We consider a TCP/IP style network, in which end-systems control their traffic rates based on congestion feedback, and routing is performed at intermediate nodes on a perdestination basis; extending standard IP, routers are allowed to use multiple outgoing links per destination. We pose two optimization problems, that generalize and combine those in congestion control and traffic engineering, w...
متن کاملDelivering Faster Congestion Feedback with the Mark-Front Strategy
Computer networks use congestion feedback from the routers and destinations to control the transmission load. Delivering timely congestion feedback is essential to the performance of networks. Reaction to the congestion can be more effective if faster feedback is provided. Current TCP/IP networks use timeout, duplicate ACKs and explicit congestion notification (ECN) to deliver the congestion fe...
متن کاملANMAC: An Architectural Framework for Network Management and Control using Active Networks
In this paper, we propose a new framework called Active Network Management and Control (ANMAC) for the management and control of high speed networks. The software architecture in ANMAC allows routers to execute dynamically loadable kernel plug-in modules which perform diagnostic functions for network management. ANMAC uses mobile probe packets to perform e cient resource reservation (using our ...
متن کاملApplication of control theory to a window-based flow control mechanism with ECN routers
A window-based flow control mechanism is a sort of feedback-based congestion control mechanisms, and has been widely used in current TCP/IP networks. Recently, use of an ECN (Explicit Congestion Notification) mechanism as congestion indication from the network to source hosts has been actively discussed in the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force). In this paper, we focus on a window-based flo...
متن کاملA Study of Active Queue Management for Congestion Control
In this work, we investigate mechanisms for Internet congestion control in general, and Random Early Detection (RED) in particular. We first study the current proposals for RED implementation and identify several structural problems such as producing large traffic oscillations and introducing unnecessary overhead in the fast path forwarding. We model RED as a feedback control system and we disc...
